Tips for Checking Ground Temperature for Your Dogs on Hot Summer Days

Updated: Oct 26, 2023

As the summer heat rises, it's crucial to take extra care of our furry friends, especially when it comes to their paws. To ensure your dog's safety during walks, here are some tips on how to check the temperature of the ground and prevent heatstroke.

First and foremost, let's discuss the "seven-second rule." This simple method can help determine if the pavement is safe for your dog. All you need to do is place the back of your hand on the ground. If you cannot comfortably hold it there for at least seven seconds, then the surface is too warm for your dog to walk on. This rule is particularly important when the air temperature reaches around 77℉. Remember, it's always better to err on the side of caution and prioritize your dog's well-being. Walking them on grass, soft ground, or in the shade can be a great practice.

Certain dog breeds are more susceptible to heat-related issues, so it's essential to be extra cautious with them. Dogs with smooshed noses, such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Pugs, have a harder time cooling themselves down due to their anatomy. Additionally, snow dogs like Huskies and Shiba Inus have thick double coats, which make them more prone to overheating. If you own one of these breeds, it's crucial to take extra precautions during hot weather.

To protect your furry friend from heatstroke, it's important to adjust your walking routine accordingly. Here are some guidelines to follow:

1. Time your walks: Try to schedule your walks during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening when the temperature is lower. Avoid taking your dog out during the peak heat hours, typically between 10 am and 4 pm.

2. Choose shaded areas: Opt for routes that offer shade, such as parks with plenty of trees or streets with tall buildings. Shade provides relief from direct sunlight and helps keep the ground temperature lower.

3. Test different surfaces: While pavements can become scorching hot, other surfaces might be cooler. Explore walking paths with grass or dirt, as these tend to retain less heat compared to concrete or asphalt. However, be mindful of any potential hazards on these surfaces, such as sharp objects or toxic plants.

4. Limit the duration: Keep your walks shorter during hot days. It's better to have multiple shorter walks spread throughout the day rather than one long walk. This allows your dog to stay active while minimizing the risk of overheating.

Remember, every dog is unique, and their tolerance to heat may vary. Watch out for signs of heat exhaustion, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, rapid heartbeat, and vomiting. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's crucial to seek immediate veterinary attention.

By following these guidelines and being mindful of ground temperatures, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for both you and your beloved four-legged companion. Stay cool, stay safe, and keep those tails wagging!
